In a classic Harvard Business Review article, “Handling Q&A: Five Kinds of Listening,” the writers identified five types of listening. By applying the concepts of their listening model to the SCOPE of Leadership attributes of great listeners, we’ve developed an eight-level listening model. The first four levels define the ineffective levels of listening that people commonly use. The second four levels define the more effective levels that people use.
Scenario: One of your best friends talks too much. Paul is an extrovert who loves to dominate the conversation. Unfortunately, Paul lost his job and is having difficulty finding a new one. He has great skills, but has received no call backs after having several first-interviews. You suspect that his tendency to talk too much is inhibiting his abilty to find work.
Paul has asked for your coaching and therefore given you the opportunity to share your thoughts about what might be preventing him from getting a job. Prepare the outline of your conversation with Paul with a particular emphasis on how he might better perform in his interviews.
