Scenario: You started your career working for Joe, a boss who didn’t believe in giving praise. Joe never received any praise during his career nor did he receive any from his dad growing up. He didn’t know what praise was much less how to give it. Fast forward, Joe is still working, but is now a first-line manager working for you. In your most recent employee survey, Joe’s direct reporting employees criticized him significantly for not providing encouragement and praise to them. Although Joe only has a few years left in his career, you know you must do something or his team will start quitting.
